Barry Rassin, Presidente del RI 2018/2019 ha esposto la sua visione per il futuro della nostra organizzazione, esortando i nuovi leader ad impegnarsi per un futuro sostenibile ed essere d’ispirazione per i Rotariani e il pubblico in generale.

Rassin, socio del Rotary Club di East Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas, ha rivelato il tema presidenziale 2018/2019 “Siate di ispirazione“, ai governatori eletti presso l’Assemblea del Rotary International a San Diego, California, USA. “Vi chiedo di ispirare i soci nei vostri club a desiderare qualcosa di più grande, di motivarli a fare di più, a migliorare sé stessi e creare qualcosa che duri ben oltre la nostra vita individuale”.

Barry Rassin ha sottolineato il potente messaggio della nuova visione del Rotary: “Crediamo in un mondo dove tutti i popoli, insieme, promuovono cambiamenti positivi e duraturi nelle comunità vicine, in quelle lontane, in ognuno di noi”. Essa descrive il Rotary che i nuovi leader devono aiutare a costruire.

Per realizzare questa visione i Rotariani devono prendersi cura dell’organizzazione: “Per prima cosa siamo un’organizzazione di soci. E se vogliamo metterci al servizio degli altri, se vogliamo raggiungere i nostri obiettivi, dobbiamo prima occuparci dei nostri soci“.

Rassin ha chiesto ai governatori entranti di “ispirare i presidenti di club e i Rotariani nei vostri distretti, a voler cambiare. Voler fare di più. Voler realizzare il proprio potenziale. Il vostro compito è di motivarli e aiutarli a trovare la via da seguire“.

Progressi sulla polio

Rassin ha osservato che una fonte di ispirazione è stata l’opera del Rotary negli sforzi di eradicazione della polio delineando gli incredibili progressi compiuti negli ultimi trent’anni. Nel 1988, erano circa 350.000 le persone paralizzate dal poliovirus selvaggio; al 10 gennaio 2018, sono stati rilevati solo 21 casi. “Siamo in un momento incredibilmente entusiasmante negli sforzi di eradicazione della polio“, ha affermato, “siamo in un punto in cui ogni nuovo caso di polio potrebbe essere davvero l’ultimo“.

Il Presidente eletto ha sottolineato che anche quando viene registrato l’ultimo caso di polio, l’impresa non sarà conclusa. “La polio non sarà eliminata fino a quando la commissione addetta non certificherà la sua scomparsa – ossia quando non ci sarà più traccia del poliovirus, in un fiume, in una fogna o in un bambino paralizzato, per almeno tre anni“, ha spiegato. “Fino ad allora, dobbiamo continuare a fare tutto ciò che stiamo facendo ora“. Ha esortato poi il continuo impegno ai programmi d’immunizzazione e di sorveglianza delle malattie.

Sostenere l’ambiente

Il Rotary negli ultimi anni ha puntato molto sulla sostenibilità del suo lavoro umanitario. “Ora – ha detto Rassin – i rotariani devono riconoscere alcune dure realtà sull’inquinamento, il degrado ambientale e il cambiamento climatico”. Ha notato che l’80 per cento del territorio del suo Paese si trova a un metro dal livello del mare. “Con i livelli del mare che si prevede aumenteranno di due metri entro il 2100 – ha detto – il mio Paese scomparirà fra 50 anni, insieme alla maggior parte delle isole dei Caraibi e le città sulla costa e nelle aree basse di tutto il mondo”.

Rassin ha esortato i leader a guardare a tutti gli aspetti del service del Rotary nell’ambito di un più ampio sistema globale. Ha spiegato che questo significa che i governatori entranti devono ispirare non solo i club, ma anche le loro comunità. “Vogliamo che il bene che facciamo sia duraturo. Vogliamo rendere il mondo un posto migliore. Non solo qui, non solo per noi, ma ovunque, per tutti, per generazioni a venire“.
