La pseudoscienza è un uomo bendato che in una stanza buia cerca di afferrare un gatto nero che non c’è e che ogni tanto urla: “l’ho preso l’ho preso!
Questa pungente definizione di Karl Popper, grande filosofo della scienza, evidenzia bene come la Medicina, esattamente come un uomo bendato, si affanni ad afferrare la verità che è paragonata a un gatto nero elusivo, sfuggente e invisibile nel buio che solo raramente si lascia afferrare.
È una dichiarazione di prudenza e modestia, riferita alla lentezza con cui le evidenze scientifiche solide e dimostrate si accumulano.
Già i greci antichi, infatti, distinguevano tra un sapere forte chiamato “episteme” e un sapere debole, cangiante, precario, fatuo e provvisorio chiamata “doxa”, ovvero l’opinione, la credenza, la moda che oggi è così e domani cambia, per poi cambiare ancora. Un esempio di sapere forte è il Teorema di Pitagora che rimane solido e indiscusso attraverso i secoli senza che su di esso si possa votare od opinare. Esempio di sapere debole (“doxa”) sono certe mode culturali che nell’arco di un decennio possono modificarsi completamente (pensiamo alle ideologie omofobe, oggi completamente sovvertite) soggette come sono a dibattito e dialettica.
Nell’ambito della salute, però, i problemi maggiori sembrano venire da una terza forma di sapere: quella da Popper rappresentata come l’uomo bendato che cerca inutilmente di pren-dere un gatto nero che non esiste ma che continuamente urla di aver afferrato. Questa è la pseudoscienza ovvero una forma di opinione variabile, cangiante che finge, talora in buona fede, più spesso no, di aver acquisito delle verità che, attraverso correlazioni statistiche apparentemente corrette, tende a fini commerciali ben camuffati.
I greci antichi potevano ignorare questa terza forma di falso sapere perché, essendo in una società preindustriale, la ricchezza e la quantità di denaro che una falsa informazione poteva muovere era limitata. Oggi una moda, invece, specie se travestita da scienza, può, nel campo della salute, muovere capitali immensi, cosa che regolarmente accade. Il detrimento è grave, non solo perché la salute stessa ne è minacciata direttamente (pensiamo a certe mode alimentari che sono chiaramente deleterie), ma anche indirettamente perché impegna risorse e sforzi in attività vane, distogliendole cure verificate e da stili di vita che invece potrebbero essere efficaci e che hanno l’unico torto di muovere pochi capitali. È molto più redditizio, infatti, tentare di vendere, poniamo, resveratrolo a € 40 al mese (e inefficace!) per prevenire l’infarto e il deterioramento cognitivo, piuttosto che invitare la gente a fare più attività fisica e avere più interessi culturali. Oppure dirottare le cure, talvolta dure quanto la malattia che vorrebbero curare, verso certe forme di pseudo medicina in cui la distribuzione di prodotti fantasiosi, da parte di avventurieri, (talora in camice, toga o abito talare) ottiene un effetto di puro placebo (che vuol dire di farmaco finto).
Il pensiero corre automaticamente ai capitali immensi che la “multinazionale dell’acqua zuccherata” (leggi: Omeopatia) muove in tutto il mondo, malgrado le class action che regolarmente perde, con risarcimenti tuttavia inferiori ai guadagni che riesce a rastrellare. Per non citare, poi, i vari casi “Stamina, Di Bella, Bonifacio, Vieri, Padre Romano Zago” ecc.
Maghi, imbonitori e ciarlatani (magari anche in buona fede!) ci sono sempre stati, ma quello che li caratterizza adesso è la loro configurazione industriale, multinazionale capace di muo-vere mezzi di informazione e di formazione a loro vantaggio.
Spesso ne risulta anche un danno indiretto alla salute come perdita di qualità della vita in chi si ostina per esempio a diete ossessivamente deprivate, in mode cocciutamente sbilanciate a favore di qualche ingrediente o alimento magico che dovrebbe dare salute, far dimagrire, mantenere la memoria, prevenire le rughe, ecc. offendo soluzioni e testimonianze aneddotiche di noti “testimonial” sorridenti, gai e “miracolati” cui il buon Pietro Metastasio avrebbe replicato col celebre verso:
Se a ciascun l’interno affanno
Si leggesse in fronte scritto
Quanti mai, che invidia fanno
Ci farebbero pietà!
Le patologie attuali, soprattutto quelle attinenti alle Neuroscienze, sono sempre più multifattoriali e quindi dipendenti da fattori genetici, epigenetici, ambientali e sociali. Spesso una malattia non viene superata da un fattore che guarisce il 70% del problema bensì da 70 fattori che guariscono ciascuno l’1% del problema, più un 30% da sempre affidato a buonsenso e fortuna.
La ricerca di questi 70 fattori, al posto della ricetta magica, è faticosa e richiede spesso un cambio della propria filosofia di vita, ivi compresa l’accettazione attiva della vecchiaia, del limite, financo della Fine.
Diceva Confucio: “Invece di imprecare contro la notte, fa’ pace con essa e accenditi una candela.”
Costoro promettono invece il sole a mezzanotte.
La pseudoscienza e le sue mode diventano, quindi, la malattia di cui vorrebbero essere la terapia.
